It took just two hours for two decades to be wiped from the memories of the Crowded House fans who came out in their thousands to watch the band re-create their farewell tour from 1996 on the Sydney Opera House forecourt.

Kicking off with their hit "Mean To Me", the New Zealand/Australian band played just over two hours of their music on Thursday night, including hits "Don't Dream It's Over", "Fall At Your Feet" and "Distant Sun" to about 5000 people at the iconic outdoor spot.

"What a beautiful night," purple-suited frontman Neil Finn told the crowd before breaking into the band's hit "Something So Strong".

The seminal group are marking 20 years since they performed their farewell tour to 100,000 people, who crowded around Circular Quay to watch them play in the exact same spot.

They're also celebrating 30 years since their formation and their induction this week into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

But the frontman also added his voice to the music industry's growing call to abolish the city's lockout laws, with a cheeky swipe at Circular Quay resident, 2GB host Alan Jones.

"Let's wake up Alan Jones," he said, urging the crowd to sing.

"So please, for the public good, sing as loud as you can, for the sake of keeping Sydney open."

He also led a tribute to the band's late drummer Paul Hester who died in 2005, performing his song "Italian Plastic".

There was a surprise appearance from former Crowded House member, and the frontman's brother, Tim Finn.

The pair harmonised through renditions of "It's Only Natural" and "Four Seasons In One Day".

The Finn brothers reunited again for the encore of "Weather With You", and the band closed out with "Better Be Home Soon".

"It's truly been a transformative night for me tonight," Neil Finn told the crowd.

"You complete me. Crowded House loves you and we can feel your love."

The group have three more nights left to play at the outdoor spot before finishing their reunion run on Sunday.
