NRL convert Marika Koroibete has made a confident start to his senior rugby career and convinced coaches he's Wallabies material, despite being starved of quality ball as the Wallaby XV lost 19-11 to the French Barbarians in Bordeaux.

Australian and Rebels assistant coach Morgan Turinui was excited by the performance of Koroibete in the winger's first rugby union match since high school.

In a scrappy affair on Thursday night (Friday morning AEDT), Koroibete provided rare highlights with his third-minute pass to try-scoring No.8 Ben Mowen and a dashing second-half kick return.

It didn't take long for Koroibete to make an impact: his first two involvements were to tackle his opponent into touch and throw the last pass for Australia's only try.

He admitted it was a struggle to get involved, however, as the contest was dominated by the opposing forward packs at a sodden Stade Chaban-Delmas where the turf was severely chopped up after each scrum.

But it was enough to impress 20-Test Wallaby Turinui, who said the biggest takeaway from the match was that teams will need to find ways to get the ball in the destructive runner's hands.

"I definitely do (think he has Wallabies potential). He didn't look out of place there," said Turinui, who will work with Koroibete at the Rebels next year.

"There's a few decent players on the wing for the Wallabies at the moment but the great thing is we have quality players pressing for positions.

"And Marika, with a Super Rugby season under his belt, I'll be expecting him to be pushing them pretty hard."

What impressed most, according to Turinui, was the work the former Wests Tigers and Melbourne Storm flyer was able to do off the ball.

"He made some really good defensive efforts off the ball to cover and also a good kick chase off one of the kick offs," Turinui added.

"He put some really good tackles on and the boys got a really good kick out of it, lifted the energy of the whole team.

"There was some really exciting stuff that he did off the ball that was probably the big thing for me."
