Boardriders Benefit Brain Trauma Patients

Coast surfers giving back to the community will get a firsthand look at how their hard work's paying off today.

Malibu Boardriders reps will head to Gosford Hospital at 9:30 to see how $17,000 raised from the Magoo Charity Classic is being put to use by the Central Coast Local Health District.

Speech Pathology Manager Katie Beckett says some of it's gone towards purchasing iPads and apps to help brain trauma patients learn to speak again.

“Many patients have devices themselves so they can download the applications and use when there’s no therapist to guide their therapy,” says Ms Beckett.

“(The patients have) difficulty engaging and joining in conversations around them, so enhancing their communication can increase social participation and also their independence.”

The Magoo Charity Classic will look to continue its work this year: the 2018 event kicks off on May 19th at Norah Head.
