An Empire Bay man's accused Council staff of making a bad situation worse, after a water main broke and flooded his property earlier this month.

Clint MacIntosh says he lost his livelihood when water gushed down to the Empire Bay Drive house he was renting on June 4.

The incident saw firies rescue two of his young children from the torrent.

The water ruined furniture and wreaked havoc with his home-run upholstery business.

Mr MacIntosh says a council assessor was sent out the property the day after he called staff, who he claims “pretty much said ‘dry your lounges out with a hair dryer’”.

“They told us they don’t take responsibility for these sorts of things; I said to the assessor, ‘How? It’s your pipe.’”

He says it came as a rude shock when the council initially offered his family of six a single bedroom unit.

“It wasn’t until our next-door neighbour starting ringing the local MPs that council actually got on board and decided to have a meeting with us and put us into housing,” Mr MacIntosh said.

“It was three and a half days we were left to fend for ourselves with the four kids.”

Council has since responded, saying it recognises the difficult situation and is working closely with families affected by the Empire Bay Drive burst.

While at its meeting in Gosford last night the local government noted a report on the 2015-16 performance for water and sewer infrastructure on the Central Coast, including a need for improvement in the number of water main breaks. 

Meantime, Councillor Jeff Sundstrom’s kicked off a fundraising campaign for the MacIntosh family.
