The Central Coast soccer community's been left in shock after a referee was sent to hospital after trying to break up a fight between players and staff yesterday.

The 56-year-old rushed to the sidelines of the third grade Kanwal v The Entrance match in Bateau Bay, when a single punch to the back of the head knocked him out for around 20 minutes.

Ambos hit Pat Morley Oval to help out, taking him to Gosford Hospital in a stable condition.

Reserve and First Grade games were called off, as Central Coast Football also looks into the incident.

In a statement, Kanwal Warnervale Rovers President Ross Ankrett reminded all members and spectators “of their individual responsibilities when it comes to behaviour”.

“We extend our sincere wishes to the Referee on a speedy recovery,” he said.

“No further comments will be made by the Club, and we ask that social media is not used to provoke or inflame this poor situation.”

Police are looking for witnesses and if you have any info, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
