Red Symons has apologised for coming across "as a racist" in a recent radio interview where he asked "what's the deal with Asians?"
The ABC presenter told listeners today he was sincerely sorry for his comments and insisted he would be "careful" in the way he explored issues on air, which came as the now-deleted interview was hit with fierce backlash.
"I came across as racist and I was wrong in the way I conducted the interview,” he said.
“I offer my sincerest apologies. We need to talk about these issues, but be careful how we consider them."
Symons was interviewing It's Not a Race podcaster Beverley Wang last Friday when he proposed his own idea."Except my segment was called 'What's the deal with Asians?' " he said.
The former Skyhooks guitarist next asked Wang: "Are you yellow?", before asking: "Do they speak Mandarin or Cantonese?"
When Wang replied "Who's they?" Symons hit back: "The people in Taiwan."
