A riot has broken out at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Melbourne’s West.
It’s believed to be in relation to a smoking ban that will be put in place across Victorian prisons tomorrow.
Channel 7 report that inmates can be seen brandishing weapons and lighting fires.
STATEMENT FROM CORRECTIONS VICTORIA:
At 12.20pm today a group of prisoners breached a secure inner perimeter of the Metropolitan Remand Centre.
Parts of the prison have been locked down and Corrections Victoria is working with Victoria Police to contain the situation.
All emergency services, including Victoria Police, are on site.
All staff have been accounted for and there are no reports of staff injuries at this stage.
Police have secured the perimeter of the prison.
There is no threat to public safety.
