The rollout of surveillance cameras across Australian aged care facilities would seek to protect vulnerable residents, according to plans being tabled in Federal Parliament.

Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) has told a Senate inquiry into aged care abuse the move “should be allowed” to keep personal carers accountable, the Courier Mail reports.

“Video surveillance should be allowed in private rooms … with the permission of residents or their families and guardians,’’ they said.

“There needs to be greater supervision of residents.’’

Alongside allegations and accounts of abusive carers, OTA also hit back at issues of “chronic understaffing’’ which reports some residents were “forced to remain in bed all day’’.

It comes as law firm Shine Lawyers indicated they’re considering legal action over the alleged treatment of residents in the aged care system.
