We all know online ticket sellers have a reputation for charging excessive fees. There's no surprise there. But there's excessive... and there's EXCESSIVE!
One AFL fan has told the Herald Sun he was slugged $50 in processing fees after buying 2 tickets to the Round 5 match between Essendon and Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. The tickets were $70 each, and Dennis Moore was happy to pay. What made him mad was the $38.89 booking fee, a $4.95 handling fee and $5.52 international bank transaction charge.
He was shopping on ticket reseller Viagogo, wrongly assuming it was an official ticketing site for the AFL.
The company's website says it charges the fees to "cover the cost of maintaining the Viagogo platform, guaranteeing tickets and providing customer service”.
Viagogo has been accused of charging Ed Sheeran and Bruce Springsteen fans highly inflated ticket prices.
As for anyone still trying to get to the footy, it's best to only buy tickets from registered and accredited sites. There's never a guarantee any other tickets will be honoured at the stadium gate.
