The terror threat level in the UK has now been lifted from severe to critical, in the wake of the Manchester Arena terror attack which killed 22 and left at least 59 seriously injured.

Prime Minister Theresa May made the announcement this morning:

"It is now concluded, on the basis of today's investigations, that the threat level should be increased for the time being from severe to critical"

"This means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly likely but that a further attack may be imminent"

"We all.. every single one of us.. stand with the people of Manchester at this terrible time"

"Let us remember those who died, and celebrate those who helped, safe in the knowledge that the terrorists will never win and our values, our country, and our way of life will always prevail"

In Australia, our threat level remains unchanged, at 'probable'.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop spoke with Channel 9 this morning, with advice for anyone travelling to the UK.

"I understand that there is a very wide investigation underway by the British authorities to determine whether there is a terror cell, a wider group, operating within Manchester and within the city."

"My recommendation would be not to travel to Manchester but of course the Australian smart traveller website will have the latest information"
