Midnight fireworks could make a return to Newcastle's New Years Eve celebrations.

It's been several years since midnight fireworks lit up the sky over Newcastle Harbour to ring in the new year, with the focus instead on the family-friendly 9pm display.

However Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said council is considering bringing back the later display in future years.

"9 o'clock is a good time for everybody to be able to enjoy the fireworks, however we are working with tourism officials and local businesses to see if we can do a double display and do midnight fireworks as well for the late revelers at a more adult time," councillor Nelmes said.

"That's something we're working towards in the future."

The 2017 New Years Eve fireworks will go off from Stockton's Griffiths Park at 9pm, with the display lasting 15-20 minutes.

There'll be music, entertainment, food and a lantern parade around the Queens Wharf precinct, with activities starting at 5:30pm.
